AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL AMBASSADOR OF CONSCIENCE AWARD
Ambassador of Conscience Award recognizes remarkable individuals and groups who have promoted and enhanced the cause of human rights by acting on their conscience, confronting injustice and using their talents to inspire others. Its remarkable alumni include committed activists, musicians, artists and public figures who have inspired millions of people to join them in defending the human rights of people all over the world.
It was conceived in 2003, inspired by the poem “From the Republic of Conscience”, written for Amnesty International by the late Nobel Laureate, Seamus Heaney.
“…He therefore desired me when I got home
to consider myself a representative
and to speak on their behalf in my own tongue.
Their embassies, he said, were everywhere
but operated independently
and no ambassador would ever be relieved.”

The Irish dance troupe Riverdance is kicking off its 25th anniversary tour with Morgan Bullock, who made history by becoming the troupe’s first Black dancer. “For me, growing up as an Irish dancer and loving to go see Riverdance and Irish dance shows, I never saw anyone who looked like me, so it’s amazing that now I have the honor to be that for other dancers,” Bullock told Local 10 News.
U2’S BONO AND the Edge give David Letterman a tour of their native Dublin as well as the band’s catalog in an upcoming Disney+ music special. Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming, With Dave Letterman finds the former late-night host accepting the U2 duo’s invitation to spend time with them in Dublin, marking Letterman’s first-ever trip to Ireland. With documentary cameras in tow, Bono, the Edge, and Letterman toured the city and its music scene, culminating in an intimate concert performed by the U2 duo at a local landmark.
Born Paul David Hewson in Dublin, Ireland, Bono is a global rock star, an activist and an entrepreneur who is currently touring the US to promote his memoir. All those facets are covered in an entertaining and occasionally hilarious 500-page book that vividly recounts passages from Bono’s life that he only hints at in his songs. Bono’s book, though, is more than a rock star’s memoir. It’s a refreshing contrast to the way many Americans today view faith and politics.
The Sani music festival in northern Greece is celebrating its 30th anniversary this month. In the balmy night air, big crowds turned out to hear Irish rock star Bob Geldof and his band the Bobkatz strum through some Boomtown Rats classic hits. Geldof is famous for his fundraising activities fighting famine, and he used his appearance to warn about the impact of the war in Ukraine on world food supplies.
Now 40, the Chicago MC has just released his best album in a decade and a half. The Ringer spoke with him about the project, his upcoming MIT course, and subverting the listeners’ expectations.
U2 songwriters Bono and The Edge performed a pastoral set in Ukraine, setting up in one of Kyiv’s subway stations, now doubling as a bomb shelter, on the invitation from Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky.
“The people in Ukraine are not just fighting for your own freedom, you are fighting for all of us who love freedom,” U2 vocalist Bono told the audience, veteran soldiers included. “We pray that you will enjoy some of that peace soon.”
